Pilates is a fitness system based on the concept of developing core strength through exercises that change muscle recruitment patterns, and can help posture, strength, coordination and flexibility. Many of these exercises are done with specialized equipment, as well as on mats or on the floor, and is known as a form of exercise to build strength without “bulking up”. No muscle groups are overtrained or undertrained, creating a balanced conditioning of the whole body, and can cultivate an awareness of the body and its movement through breath, alignment and stress reduction. Pilates is a safe and gentle way to get a challenging and rewarding workout, and is also used in physical therapy settings for rehabilitation. Joseph Pilates, who developed pilates in the 1930's, was known to say “It is the mind itself which builds the body”.
