Natural childbirth does not use obstetrical drugs or unnecessary interventions during labor and birth, and a midwife works with a mother throughout the pregnancy and generally offers more assistance and personal attention than a doctor. A woman may choose natural birthing techniques in an attempt to reduce the occurrence of birthing difficulties and side effects that may be caused by drugs such as sedatives and anesthetics. Natural childbirth gives a woman more control over the events surrounding labor and delivery than a conventional hospital birth, as she can choose how much she’d like to move around, which positions feel most comfortable, and which coping techniques (such as meditation, yoga, bodywork or a warm shower) she wants to use.
