Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a medical science guided by ancient Chinese healing theories, which provides healthy and safe treatments and prevention of disease. Chinese medical theory is based on the balance of yin and yang, and within yin and yang lie the five elements: Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal exist in the universe as energetic and physical parts of the whole, and each has corresponding traits and symptoms. Imbalance of these elements in a person creates illness and disease. According to Chinese medicine there are four basic foundations of achieving and maintaining good health: diet, exercise, adequate rest and relaxation, and a good mental attitude. Chinese medicinal drugs are an important component of Chinese medicine as well, and consist of natural product treatments including herbal remedies, acupuncture, moxibustion, massage, plaster or steam baths. These medicines and remedies work to reestablish balance and bring the patient back to harmonious health.
